In the locksmith industry, we often encounter all sorts of widely believed (but false) myths. These myths can be damaging, as clients might expect certain things (or not realise we offer certain services).
For example, did you know that picking a lock isn’t always as easy as it looks? And that replacing a lock is a last resort (unless a key has been lost or stolen)? What about the common belief that locksmiths only work with keys, locks and bolts?
On this page, we’ll walk you through four common locksmith myths like those just mentioned, and debunk them.
All locksmiths charge the same rates
Every locksmith you go to will quote at their own hourly or per-job rate. The big national chains are often more expensive than local companies (such as ourselves). That’s probably because everyone knows about them; you’re paying for that reputation.
You could save a lot of money by using a local locksmith instead. Of course, it’s vital to do your research into the business to ensure it’s legitimate. For example, check if the locksmith has an MLA membership and read reviews about past customer experiences.
In every situation, more complicated and longer jobs cost more. For example, installing a safe carries a higher charge than picking a lock.
A locksmith always finds it easy to pick a lock
Here’s something we wish everyone knew: picking a lock can be challenging. Sometimes, we’ll get straight in, especially on older or cheaply-installed locks. But if you’ve got a high-security locking system (as we’d recommend), it can be much more tricky.
Don’t worry – we’ll find a way. But customers sometimes expect a locksmith to turn up with their tools and, within moments, the door to spring open. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work like that. On some occasions, it might take us a little while. Every locking mechanism is different, and it takes hours of practice to learn how to open each one.
When a locksmith turns up for the first time without a lock-picking kit is when you should worry. If they reach straight for the drill, it might mean they simply can’t be bothered to try opening your lock. Fitting a new one is far more expensive for you.
Having said that, some circumstances legitimately call for new locks, so don’t necessarily jump to conclusions.
Locksmiths only work with traditional locks
Most people associate a ‘locksmith’ with the traditional locking mechanisms: pin and tumbler locks on home doors and windows. But a modern locksmith offers far more than that. They cover almost every aspect of technological security, working with devices to prevent or limit access.
For example, at Grays Locksmiths, we work with homes, businesses and vehicles (cars, work vans, etc.). Our services include (but aren’t limited to):
- Lock and key replacement
- Lock picking
- CCTV installation
- Alarm systems
- Security lighting
- Safe installation
- Access systems (key cards, retina scans, etc.)
- Security shutters and grilles
- Car key replacement and re-coding
Every locksmith offers a guarantee
You should certainly be able to trust the locksmith you’re working with – arguably even more so than any other profession. After all, the individual in question has access to your property and is trusted with keeping unwanted persons out.
Unfortunately, not every locksmith is insured, and some locksmiths (as in any industry) might produce poor-quality work. Before you hire someone, ask if they have insurance and find reviews of their past work.
For greater reassurance, check whether a locksmith is MLA-registered. The Master Locksmiths Association keeps close tabs on all members, who must be thoroughly trained and capable, returning at regular intervals for professional training updates. As well as being competent, all MLA locksmiths are trusted and insured.
