After spending all that time, effort and money building your enterprise, protecting it with essential business security ‘must haves’ is crucial for its ongoing success.
In 2018, there were 103,391 burglaries across the UK against business premises and properties. While these numbers dropped significantly during the COVID lockdowns (because nowhere was open), they’re now on the way back up.
Protecting your business with advanced security measures is a sure way to help stave off crime, whether organised or impulsive. Here are the ‘must haves’ every commercial organisation should have on-site.
We’re an MLA-approved Master Locksmith organisation at Gray’s Locksmiths, focusing on physical security like CCTV cameras, alarms, security lights, safes, shutter doors, etc. We’d also recommend hiring a cybersecurity expert to plug any virtual breaches into your business.
Burglar alarms
A burglar alarm is one of the most well-known security measures, fitted both to commercial and residential properties alike. When sensors pick up movement or register a door opening, they send out a shrill noise and immediately alert the alarm company (and potentially the police).
They’re a great deterrent. When a would-be criminal sees the activated alarm box outside the property, they’ll think twice about breaking in. If they still decide to go ahead, the alarm’s noises should scare them off before they do any damage.
CCTV
CCTV is a secure network of private, local video feeds. The cameras placed around your property record everything non-stop so you can check up on any suspicious activity reports.
If anyone tries to access your business premises, the CCTV will show their exact movements. If you’re lucky, you might even get a close look at their clothes, build or face. This evidence can be sent to the police to aid them in searching for the culprit.
Security lighting
Security lighting for businesses is usually activated by movement sensors. However, you could also opt for timer-controlled or ‘always-on-at-night’ systems.
They’re a relatively cheap option and essential for all commercial properties. In most cases, they’re best used alongside CCTV, where the lighting can dramatically help the camera identify a person.
Most impulsive criminals will also be spooked by a motion-activated floodlight illuminating their position.
Commercial safes
Even though we’re heading for a cashless society, you might still be paid in the now old-fashioned way. A commercial safe is essential for holding that cash in a more secure location than the till, but before you have time to take it to the bank.
It’s not just cash that can be stored in a commercial safe. Blank cheque books, important identity- or credit-related information, and other financial assets can all be safely stored.
A commercial safe is particularly tough for criminals to access. Combining this with storing it in a hidden location within the property and regularly transferring funds to the bank makes an attempted burglary a waste of time for most lawbreakers.
Anti-snap locks
Anti-snap locks are a great way to prevent the simplest and most common type of burglary… when criminals snap the lock. With standard locks, all they have to do is apply excessive force to the lock cylinder, and it breaks. The door then swings open.
Anti-snap locks are still euro cylinder locks but a more robust version. If the front snaps off during an illegal access attempt, it remains in place, holding the door closed and locked. Fit multiple anti-snap locks for the best defence possible.
Gray’s Locksmiths provides ABS anti-snap locks. In our opinion, these are the best money can buy.
Gray’s Locksmiths Nottingham
Gray’s Locksmiths Ltd is a Master Locksmith Association member based in Nottingham. We were founded in 1987 by Jim Gray near Canning Circus, and since then, our expertise and products have expanded to include the vast range we have today.
Over the past 35 years, we’ve seen precisely how burglars gain illegal access to target buildings and how their methods have evolved over the centuries. We’ve also seen how vulnerable some commercial properties are, which is why our essential business security ‘must haves’ can make such a significant difference.
If your Nottingham-area business is missing any of the above security measures, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information. We’re always happy to have an obligation-free chat about what you need and how we might be able to help.
