Five easy ways to enhance your business security

We’re into 2023! The world keeps turning, and you and your business continue working hard. Unfortunately, the criminals don’t stop, either.

It’s as important as ever to protect your organisation from crime. Although insurance might cover your losses, it’s disheartening to see your hard work vanish or be destroyed overnight.

At Gray’s Locksmiths in Nottingham, it’s our job to look after you. Whether you need new locks, a commercial safe, CCTV, or something else, we’ve got something that can help you enhance your business security. We’ve put a few ideas together for you on this page.

CCTV (including warning signs)

CCTV catches any would-be burglars, thieves or shoplifters in the act. Its primary purpose, though, is to put people off committing the crime in the first place.

In theory, when someone sees a CCTV camera (and knows it can see them, too), they won’t risk breaking the law. On the few occasions that they do, it’s often a case of a repeat visit. Scanning back through the footage might provide clues as to who they were.

We recommend installing CCTV in obvious locations (but they should be essentially impossible to climb up to). Don’t neglect the warning signs, either. They’ll make people think twice.

Security lighting

Security lighting is designed to activate based on motion sensors. You could also set them up to turn on at a specific time once it’s dark.

Again, security lighting itself doesn’t do anything to physically stop crime from happening. But it does reveal the individual and their actions. In most cases, this makes them scarper.

For the occasions when it doesn’t, ensure your security lighting is paired with high-definition CCTV. You’ll catch them red-handed if this is the case.

Alarm system with security call-out company

Smart alarms are another crucial security installation every Nottinghamshire business should have. Like the features mentioned above, their primary role is prevention rather than catching a criminal.

Alarms are triggered by motion activation or the opening of a door or window attached to a sensor. It then sends an alert to the alarm company and sounds that high-pitched squealing noise. If it’s night-time and you’re otherwise alone, we advise connecting with a security officer for your safety before heading out to inspect it.

Don’t neglect the alarm box. If nothing else, this informs criminals that your property is protected. An attempted break-in is, therefore, a higher risk for them and less likely to happen.

Protect fleet/company vehicles

Fleet vehicles and company cars are often neglected. Yet, to a semi-skilled criminal, they’re worth quite a lot of money somewhere across the country (or the world). For impulsive individuals, they’re much easier to smash a window and break into than your actual property.

For example, consider changing the locks or getting new keys when applicable. Fit tracking devices in obscure locations where they won’t get damaged (but don’t forget to tell your employees). Ensure the windows and doors are locked at night and don’t leave anything visible from the outside.

Invest in cybersecurity

These days, threats don’t just come from the physical world outside. Criminals might have access to information with which they could defraud, blackmail or ransom. They could also find bank details, personal information, transaction records, passwords, etc. All of this could lead to funds being stolen or identity theft.

It’s our job to look after your physical property. However, we also recommend working with a cybersecurity expert to install solid firewalls, anti-virus programs, VPNs, etc. Ideally, you should also look into cloud data backup (DRaaS).
