It’s almost 2023. The world is changing and adapting to unforeseen circumstances at a never-seen-before rate. You’ll undoubtedly have experienced this turbulence in your business setting, too.
We’re now emerging from the global grip of Covid (hopefully). As such, we expect to see cybercrime rates decrease as more burglaries and thefts occur. (Cyberattacks will no doubt continue with a vengeance, though!)
This page is a simple guide we’ve come up with to protect your business and meet the expected trends of 2023.
Staff training
Staff training tops off our list. You could have the most advanced security system in the world, but if an employee leaves the door open overnight, it’s useless.
Investing a moderate sum in a detailed, interactive course will ensure your employees (present and future) are prepared.
Burglar alarms
Perhaps it’s cliché to say that burglar alarms are vital, but they are. The mere presence of an alarm box will dissuade most from attempting a break-in.
The system will notify you and the alarm company if somebody tries to gain access. The loud sirens will make any intruders run off or cause them to rush.
CCTV and security lighting
CCTV and security lighting do essentially the same thing: reveal what’s otherwise hidden. Again, despite appearances, these are more about crime prevention than identifying burglars.
Criminals are much less likely to attempt to steal anything from a business with effective CCTV and security lighting setups. The risk of being caught is too significant, and the police could use CCTV footage in court against them.
Post warning signs everywhere
Some people might not even notice your alarm, CCTV, or security lighting. Make sure they do by posting warning signs around your property (including the inside).
These should put most criminals off. In the unlikely event they don’t, they’ll have no defence in court. You’ve told them about the security measures, and they’ve broken in regardless.
Access control systems
In non-customer-facing environments, controlling who has access to your building is vital. Permitting anyone to walk in off the street poses a significant security risk.
Install access control systems (such as key card readers) to limit who can enter. You can also use this information to see who has accessed the door and when.
Shutter doors
Most shops have shutter doors. Owners and shop attendants drop them after closing time. Some shutter doors prevent projectiles from hitting the glass, protecting it. Others are designed to simply conceal what’s hidden inside, making impulse crime less likely. Either way, we’d advise most shops to install one.
Commercial safes
Your business most likely trades (at least in part) in some kind of physical valuables (such as cash). You might also store other crucial information on your premises, such as passwords, end-of-day income reports, and balance sheets. The only secure way to keep these on-site is with a commercial safe. If you don’t yet have one, consider installing one as soon as possible.
Cybersecurity
The world has been heavily dependent on internet technology for some time now. However, we’re now totally reliant on it, especially since the Covid lockdowns. All businesses should have effective cybersecurity, including passwords, two-factor authentication, firewalls, and fall-back procedures. Disaster recovery plans are also critical to have in place. Again, you could have the best cybersecurity system, but without proper staff training, there’s always a way in for a criminal.
Vehicle security
If your business has its own vehicles, consider installing tracking devices. Of course, you should also take all the usual precautions, such as hiding keys, using steering wheel locks, and never leaving valuables inside. The more well-guarded a car, van, truck, or bicycle is, the less likely it is to be broken into.
Get all your security systems serviced
Ensure your security systems are working! If they aren’t, they’ll be of no use whatsoever. Invest in regular (yearly) servicing for your burglar alarm and access control systems. Problems with other features can be dealt with as they arise.
