Most people assume their front door is secure. There’s a lock on it, after all. But if your door has a euro cylinder (that oval-shaped lock with a keyhole in the centre), a burglar could be inside your home in under 30 seconds without making much noise, leaving little visible damage, and without needing any particular skill.
Lock snapping has become one of the most common methods burglars use to break into UK homes, and Nottingham properties are far from immune. Victorian and Edwardian terraces, modern new builds, and homes with uPVC doors all tend to use euro cylinders as standard. That means a significant proportion of homes in this city are vulnerable right now, and most of their owners have no idea.
This article explains what lock snapping is, why so many locks fail against it, and what you can do to protect your home.
What is lock snapping?
Euro cylinders have a structural weak point where they protrude beyond the door face. Apply enough force to that exposed section, using a pair of mole grips or a similar tool, and the cylinder snaps cleanly in two. Once that happens, the burglar uses a screwdriver to manipulate what’s left of the mechanism and open the door. The whole process takes seconds.
What makes this method so popular with burglars is how little it demands of them. The tools cost very little and are freely available. No specialist knowledge is required. And because the attack is quick and relatively quiet, neighbours rarely notice anything suspicious. From the outside, there’s often no obvious sign of how entry was gained, which is one reason so many snap attacks go unrecognised, even in police reports.
How common is lock snapping in the UK?
Lock snapping accounts for a significant proportion of all domestic burglaries in the UK. Because the method leaves minimal visible damage and can easily be misclassified, the true scale is likely higher than official figures suggest. What’s clear is that experienced burglars favour it precisely because it’s fast, low-risk and effective against the locks fitted to millions of homes. This isn’t a niche technique. It’s the go-to method for anyone who breaks into houses regularly.
Is your door at risk?
If you have a uPVC or composite door with a euro cylinder, the honest answer is probably yes, especially if the lock was fitted when the door was installed and has never been replaced. Take a look at your cylinder. If it protrudes more than 3mm beyond the door face on either side, it’s particularly exposed to a snap attack.
Many Nottingham homes have locks that are 10, 15, or even 20 years old. They were adequate when fitted by the standards of the time, but security technology has moved on considerably since then. The reassuring news is that this is one of the most straightforward security problems to fix, and it usually costs far less than people expect.
What makes an anti-snap lock different?
Anti-snap cylinders are specifically engineered to defeat this type of attack. They contain a sacrificial section that’s designed to break away under force while leaving the internal locking mechanism intact. The burglar snaps the cylinder and gets nothing useful for their efforts.
When you’re looking at replacement cylinders, you want to see several protective features, including anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-bump ratings. The benchmark standard in the UK is TS007, and a 3-star rating is what security professionals and insurers recommend. You can achieve this either with a single 3-star cylinder, or by pairing a 1-star cylinder with a 2-star door handle.
That last point matters more than many people realise. Some insurers now specifically require TS007 3-star rated locks. If your home is broken into and your locks don’t meet that standard, your claim could be rejected. Fitting a certified anti-snap cylinder isn’t just about protecting your home. It’s about making sure your insurance actually works when you need it.
At Grays Locksmiths, we only install cylinders that meet these standards. There are cheap alternatives on the market that claim anti-snap features without proper certification, and we won’t fit them.
Other lock upgrades worth considering at the same time
Upgrading your cylinder is the single most impactful change you can make, but while we’re looking at your door, it’s worth checking a few other things too.
Your lock is only as strong as the door frame around it. Many break-ins succeed not because the lock fails, but because the frame splits when the door is kicked. Reinforcement plates around the strike plate spread the load across a much wider area and make this kind of attack far more difficult. If your door hinges are exposed on the outside, hinge bolts are a simple and inexpensive addition that prevent the door from being lifted off entirely.
It’s also worth checking how many locking points your uPVC door engages when you lift the handle and turn the key. Some doors lock at only one point, leaving the rest of the frame vulnerable to being forced, even with a good cylinder in place. A multi-point locking system addresses this properly.
And if you’re interested in keyless entry or keeping track of who comes and goes, some anti-snap cylinders are compatible with smart lock technology. It’s worth asking us about your options when we visit.
How can Grays Locksmiths help?
As MLA-approved Master Locksmiths, we don’t just swap cylinders and leave. When we visit your property, we look at the whole picture, including how far the cylinder protrudes, the condition of the frame, the number of locking points, the hinges and the overall state of your door. You’ll get honest advice about what needs attention and what’s fine as it is.
For most homes, a cylinder upgrade is a single-visit job that takes less time than you might expect. You’ll go from a vulnerable standard lock to a fully certified, insurance-compliant anti-snap cylinder, with the peace of mind that your front door is no longer an easy target.
If you’ve recently moved into a property, this is worth prioritising. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous owner’s keys are out there, or what condition the existing locks are in. Changing the cylinders as soon as you move in is one of the smartest things you can do.
